14 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A constant velocity ratio universal joint of plunging type, with an outer joint member having a cylindrical interior and grooves formed therein, an inner joint member with a convex surface and grooves therein, balls in the grooves, and an annular ball cage engaging the convex surface of the inner joint member and the cylindrical interior of the outer joint member. When plunge occurs, the balls skid along the grooves in the outer joint member. The engagement between the inner joint member and cage is such that the cage can move axially to a limited extent relative to the joint member, so that at the start of plunging movement the balls are able to roll for a short distance before they skid. This reduces the resistance of the joint to the commencement of plunging movement. The movement between the inner joint member and cage is obtained by having their engaging surfaces curved but of different radii.
