A constriction device (70) that constricts body tissue and is formed of relatively thin elastic material includes a tear resistance structure to preclude an inadvertent tear in the device from propagating through the device (70). The tear resistance structure (134) includes a plurality of intersecting ribs (136 and 138) formed in the elastic material. The ribs (136 and 138) circumscribe the device (70) and define rectangular (150 and 152), square (154 and 156), diamond (158), wavy (160 and 162), or knurled patterns.
