CONTACT RETENTION ARRANGEMENT FOR HIGH DENSITY CABLE CONNECTOR ASSEMBLY ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A high density electrical connector is provided for supporting a plurality of contact assemblies in a geometric array. Each contact assembly comprises a conductive contact portion, a retention portion, a vertical offset portion and a conductive connection portion. An insulative housing is provided having a plurality of contact assembly support cavities. Each cavity includes a rib projecting therein which is adapted to pass between a pair of normally closed, spring members, which define the retention portion of the contact assembly. The spring members are spread apart by the rib as the contact assembly is inserted into its respective cavity. The rib is provided to have an extent such that when the contact assembly is fully inserted into the cavity, the spring members return to their closed position and engage a portion of the rib to resist removal of the contact assembly from the cavity.
