A CONTACTLESS SEAL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An annular contactless seal, particularly for large diameter rotary parts such as water turbine parts, of the type wherein barrier medium such as filtered water is supplied to an annular pressure chamber provided in the sealing face of the seal. According to the invention, the pressure chamber is subdivided into a plurality of equidistantly spaced sub- chambers each of which communicates, via a throttling conduit, with a source of the barrier medium, whereby the seal is capable of operating with a smaller sealing gap to reduce the loss of the barrier medium.
