ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A nuclear reactor system wherein useful thermal energy and plutonium are produced. A smaller, high velocity, sub-critical, downward traveling slug intercepts a larger, much slower, downward falling, sub-critical, larger target-mass. The combined masses are more than prompt-critical and the effects of the resulting ex- plosion are contained within a large pressure vessel. Spray of mostly molten sodium as a slurry with actinides therein protects the walls from the neutrons, photons, and blast-shock of the ex- plosion and absorbs thermal energy and debris from the explosion. Heated slurry which contains neutron-irradiated actinides is drained from the pressure vessel to provide useful heat energy and pre- cipitated materials which with sodium, are used in the fabrication of both new slugs and target-masses.
