ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A container has a closure which consists a lid with an annular flange separated by an annular failure zone. When the container is originally sealed the closure is inserted into an opening formed in the container and the flange is permanently connected to a flanged top surface of the container which surrounds the opening. The lid is dished inwardly from the failure zone into the opening surface. The lid may be broken open and torn along the length of the failure zone by a locally applied force. The application of force inwards will as a rule displace the dished lid inwardly within the opening to stop against a ledge provided in the container. The lid adopts a similar position in a re-sealed container. Gripping devices, preferably in the form of stiffening ribs, make it easier to remove the lid from the position just mentioned.
