ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A container for use in a method of loading the same with fuel rods separated from an irradiated nuclear reactor fuel element which includes the steps of positioning the container in a horizontal position, feeding the fuel rods into the container in a substantially horizontal direction, and dropping the fuel rods down into the container. The container comprises an annular wall defining a longitudinal axis; two end face walls at respective ends of the annular wall; and, loading opening means formed in one of the end walls for receiving the fuel rods therethrough when the latter are fed into the container. The loading opening means is disposed close to the inner wall surface of the annular wall.
