A container (10) for scaling fish prevents the scattering of loosened scales from the fish (F) during scaling. The present container (10) has an open top (24) with liquid impervious walls (14, 16, 18, 20) and floor (28). The floor (28) slopes to a drain (38), which may pass through the floor (28) or through a low point along one wall. The drain (38) includes a guard (40) or screen therein, to prevent passage of fish scales or similarly sized articles. The container (10) is filled with water (W) with the drain (38) capped, or the container (10) is placed in a sink or basin which is filled with water. A fish (f) may then be placed in the container (10) and scaled, with the viscosity and density of the water (W) precluding scattering of the removed scales. When scaling has been completed, the water (W) is drained from the container (10), with the scales carried to the drain (28) by the water flow and captured by the guard (38).
