ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: In a container for the storage of radioactive material comprising an inner casing for receiving he material and an outer casing made of a ceramic material which surrounds the inner casing, it is of prime importance that mechanical and thermal stresses which occur during storage and transport do not lead to destruction of the outer casing. In order to achieve this, there is provided a container for the storage of radioactive material, com- prising an inner casing for receiving the material, and at least one resiliently deformable contact element made of heat conducting material and connected to the inner casing. The outer casing is made of ceramic material and has a smooth inner wall. The inner casing is held within the outer casing solely by the contact element, which is resili- ently biased into friction contact or friction contact assisted by an adhesive with the inner wall of the outer casing, the contact being distributed over a large surface area of the inner wall.
