In a system for inspecting containers, a container is held in stationary position and rotated about its axis. Light energy is directed onto the container as it is rotated, and a camera obtains an image of the container illuminated by the light energy. The container image, consisting of a plurality of pixel data bytes each forming a portion of the image, is directed serially and in sequence to a programmable logic device, in which an array of hardware logic elements is configured such that the elements of the array operate on a plurality of sequential pixel data bytes simultaneously and in real time. The pixel data is analyzed to obtain inspection information as a function of optical characteristics of the container. [DS-71/RCC]
