72750-41 ABSTRACT A container loading device is provided, having a flexible hammock with an aperture therein, supported by rollers mounted in a parcel receiving chute held above a container by a frame. A container is positioned under the aperture, and parcels are directed into the hammock, through the aperture and into the container. A control device controls movement of the hammock through the following sequence: (a) a parcel receiving phase during which the hammock is taut and stationary, (b) a parcel lowering phase during which a sag develops in the hammock which descends into the container together with parcels thereon, (c) a phase during which the hammock unwinds from one roller onto the other roller so that the aperture passes under the parcels so they can drop into the container, and (d) a phase during which the hammock is drawn taut again but wound oppositely on the rollers to again receive parcels.
