The container-transporting system includes a network of tracks arranged transversely at right angles and parallel which form points of intersection. Rails extend along at least one of the tracks in regions outside the points of intersection. The containers are moved on the tracks by means of a transporting carnage. Each transporting carriage includes wheels which are turnable about a respective pivot spindle in the region of the intersection. Stators, located on the tracks, are configured and disposed to cooperate with magnets under the carriage to move it longitudinally and traversely on the tracks. This system allows heavy containers to be easily moved, in a fully automatic manner, in any direction on the network of tracks.
