A B S T R A C T Improvements relating to containers The invention discloses a method of forming plastics material containers from heated plastics sheet material in a thermoforming apparatus, wherein sheet material is first of all displaced away from the mould cavity on to the surface of a chamber opposite the mould cavity using a very high pressure differential, in order to induce hoop orientation in the material, and then the displaced material is moved into the mould cavity against the high pressure differential and finally is shaped to the shape of the mould cavity. By using a chamber of predetermined shape and maintained at the orientation temperature, containers having a reasonably predictable degree of orientation, at least in the top region thereof, can be produced. The invention discloses also that a plug and clamp are used to clamp the sheet material and to pull it into the mould cavity against the high pressure differential.
