A can end is double seamed on to a can body (1) having a downwardly turned flange. Typically at an angle .alpha. of -12.5~. The flange radius l1 is between 0.75 mm and 1.15 mm, and the flange fibre length (l1 + l2 + l3) to a position 1.4 mm below the top of the can body is between 3.22 mm and 4 mm. The axial load applied between the can end and the can body is less than that associated with conventional can bodies, and typically less than 600 N.
