A noise filtering technique for reducing noise in an image comprised of an array of pixels achieves strong filtering over smooth areas and less filtering over rich edge areas. The technique commences by defining an M x N neighborhood of pixels for a selected pixel, where M and N are integers. The technique also includes the step of establishing a local filter strength for the selected pixel in accordance with its local variance, and filtering the selected pixel to reduce noise in accordance with its established local filter strength.

L'invention concerne une technique de filtrage du bruit destinée à réduire le bruit dans une image constituée par un réseau de pixels et permettant d'obtenir un filtrage plus puissant sur des zones lisses et un filtrage moins puissant sur des zones de bordures riches. Cette technique consiste à définir un voisinage M x N de pixels pour un pixel sélectionné, M et N étant des nombres entiers. Elle consiste en outre à établir une puissance de filtrage local pour le pixel sélectionné conformément à sa variance locale, et à filtrer le pixel sélectionné en vue d'une réduction du bruit conformément à la puissance de filtrage local établie.
