The invention includes both methods for authenticating optical storage media and methods for providing means for authenticating optical storage media actually on the optical recording medium. One of the methods for providing authentication means metalizes a portion of the optical recording medium (36), followed by spin coating the previously uncoated portion of the recording medium with an optical state changing security material (34), followed by overcoating this with a reflective layer (34). Correctable or uncorrectable errors may be placed in predetermined areas of the medium and the presence of these detected to authenticate the optical recording medium and distinguish it from an unauthorized duplicate or copy.
