ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic focus apparatus for use with an optical system having lens means and lens drive means which includes range sensing means for providing a time-varying output signal having first and second states, the last tran- sition of the output signal from the first to the second state being indicative of a position of proper focus, dead- band means for providing a deadband period determined by the position of the lens means, focus correction required means providing a focus correction required signal if the last output signal of the first state occurs either before or after the deadband period, focus correction direction means for providing a focus correction direction signal indicative of a first direction if the last output signal first state occurs after the deadband period, and indicative of a second direction if the last output signal first state occurs before the deadband period, and focus control means for controlling the lens drive means as a function of the focus correction required signal and the focus correction direction signal.
