ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: This invention is concerned with a method and an apparatus for cooling a casting in a continuous casting of steel, wherein a coolant is sprayed on the surface of the casting at a controlled rate of impingement, between two guide elements that are consecutive in the direction of travel of the casting. In accordance with the invention, the cooling fluid is optionally sprayed from either one or two substantially codirectional spray fans which initially extend side-by-side in two planes but which then coalesce to create a single flat sheet of coolant which in thickness and direction of either one of the two component spray fans alone. Such a method and apparatus advantageously permits to reduce clearance between the consecutive guide elements, to increase the casting rate, to improve the cooling uniformity and to reduce the risk of cracks in the casting.
