A wall of a four-piece mould is made by machining cooling channels into one side of a steel backup member. The cooling channels are filled with wax which is then covered with conductive paint or tape. A layer of copper is now electroplated onto the side of the backup member with the cooling channels, and nickel and chromium are plated over the copper in succession. Upon completion of plating, the wax is removed from the cooling channels by melting the wax. Alternatively to machining the cooling channels into the backup member, strips of plastic may be adhesively secured to the backup member prior to plating. The plastic strips, which have widths and heights equal to the desired widths and depths of the cooling channels, are placed on the backup member at the intended locations of the cooling channels. Copper is plated onto the backup member to the height of the strips which are then removed to form the cooling channels. The cooling channels are filled with wax and the process of making the mould wall is then completed as before.
On fabrique une paroi de moule en quatre parties en usinant des canaux de refroidissement (3) sur un côté (2) d'un élément d'appui en acier (1). On remplit lesdits canaux de refroidissement (3) avec de la cire (4) que l'on recouvre ensuite d'une peinture conductrice ou d'un ruban (5). On plaque alors, par procédé électrolytique, une couche de cuivre (6) sur le côté (2) de l'élément d'appui (1) comportant les canaux de refroidissement (3), puis on plaque successivement du nickel (7) et du chrome (8) au-dessus du cuivre (7). Une fois l'opération de plaquage terminée, on retire la cire (4) des canaux de refroidissement (3) en la faisant fondre. Au lieu d'usiner les canaux de refroidissement (3) à l'intérieur de l'élément d'appui (1), on peut fixer, de manière adhésive, des bandes de plastique (10) à l'élément d'appui aux emplacements où l'on usinerait les canaux de refroidissement (3). On plaque du cuivre (6) sur l'élément d'appui (1) sur une épaisseur correspondant à celle des bandes (10) puis on retire celles-ci de manière à former les canaux de refroidissement (3). On achève ensuite la paroi comme précédemment.
