A mold assembly includes a mold, and an electromagnetic stirrer which encircles the mold. A tubular baffle is disposed between the stirrer and the mold and circumscribes the latter. The baffle has a first portion which extends from a first end of the mold towards, but terminates short of, an opposite second end of the mold. The baffle further has a second portion which extends from the first portion towards the second end of the mold. The first portion is composed of a nonmagnetic and magnetically-nonconductive material which does not impede the magnetic flux generated by the stirrer. On the other hand, the second portion is composed of a magnetic or magnetically-conductive material which absorbs and/or shunts at least part of the magnetic flux traveling towards the mold.
