CONTINUOUS FLOW MULTISTATE DEWATERING APPARATUS FOR REMOVING WATER FROM AN AQUEOUS SUSPENSION OF PULP MATERIAL WHILE BEING CONVEYED TO A STEAM PRESSUR- IZED REACTION VESSEL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for feeding disintegrated lignocellulose-con- taining material, such as wood chips or bagasse, into a reaction vessel in which the material is treated in an environment of steam or gas of superatmospheric pressure, in the presence of chemicals, if desired, to produce fiber pulp or furfurol or similar products. The starting material is highly diluted with water and subjected to several dewatering steps in order to reduce it to a very high consistency upon entry into the reaction vessel. The dewatering of the aqueous suspension of the starting material takes place in sequential steps so that the superatmospheric pressure in the re- action vessel is maintained and blow-back of the steam or gas therein into the dewatering device is prevented by the formation of a steam-tight plug of the material at the inlet to the reaction vessel.
