A gondola car (20) for use with a train of like gondola cars that comprises a body (12) having a floor (18) and two sidewalls (22, 24), a bridge extension (26) connected to the floor (18) and extending outwardly beyond the two sidewalls (22, 24), a wall transition member (90, 91) of arcuate shape extending beyond the end of one of the sidewalls (22, 24), and a pivotal connector (89) positioned adjacent the bridge extension (26) for enabling pivotal movement between the gondola car (20) and an adjacent gondola car. The wall transition member (90, 91) is fastened to one of the sidewalls (22, 24) and is in sliding rotational relation to an arcuate-shaped guide section (87d, 87e) on an adjacent gondola car. The bridge extension (26) has a curved edge (88a, 88b) affixed to the bottom edge of the wall transition member (90, 91). The curved edge (88a, 88b) has a radius of curvature generally equal to the radius of curvature of the arcuate-shaped guide section (87d, 87e) of the wall transition member (90, 91). The floor (18) has a plurality of apertures (30) for receiving a fixed cleat (110) from a tractor/shovel (16). The bridge extension (26) has a configuration so as to overlap the floor (18) of an adjacent gondola car.
