A system for continuously monitoring tensioned reinforcements in a structure (10), such as for example bridges or modem buildings, has a plurality of detectors (D1, D2, D3) randomly and conveniently positioned about the structure (10). The detectors (D1, D2, D3) an responsive to acoustic or seismic energy emissions to produce a signal. The signals associated with reinforcement failure are analyzed (14) to locate the site of reinforcement failure. The system is simple and yet highly sensitive when compared to previously known monitoring systems.
