ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A third party liquid (T.P.L.) is introduced into a closed type pressure filter from which cake accumulated on filter media positioned therein is to be discharged continuously or semi- continuously, said T.P.L. being a liquid that does not react with, is not a solvent for, does not emulsify and does not swell the filter feed; that has a specific gravity between that of the liquid and that of the solids of the filter feed and that has poor inflammability or noninflammability and/or nontoxicity and low viscosity. A mixture of the T.P.L. and the cake to be discharged from the filter media is removed from a layer formed by the T.P.L. in the closed type pressure filter, and said mixture is separated into the solids and the third party liquid in a subsequent open type continuous filter.
