Disclosed is a continuous process for producing a chlorine-free tetraalkoxysilane of the formula (R1O)4Si (wherein R1 is hydrocarbon) from metallic silicon powder and an alcohol (R1OH) in the presence of the a base catalyst with improved selectivity and improved yields. The catalyst is a mixture of a silicon compound [R2O-(R3O)m]n Si[OR1]4-n, an alkali metal alcoholate R2O-(R3O)m-M and a (polyether)alcohol R2O-(R3O)m-H, where R2 is hydrocarbon or hydrogen, R3 is hydrocarbon, M is alkali metal, m is 0 to 20 and n is 0 to 4.
