ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A continuous closed-loop process for directly producing potassium chlorate by electrolysis of an aqueous potassium chloride solution with a metal anode is described. The process provides surprising advantages in efficiency by comparison with conventional double decomposition processes for producing potassium chlorate from electrolyzed sodium chloride. The metal anode is coated with a precious metal, oxide or alloy or a platinate. The aqueous solution is passed through a heat exchanger using a heated cooling medium which is at a temperatue below the equilibrium temperature of the solution in the cell but above the temperature atwhich potassium chlorate crystallizes from solutions of the concentration selected for the process. In effluent solution containing potassium chlorate is removed from the cell and cooled until crystals of the chlorate form. The crystals are removed from effluent and the latter is enriched by adding a controlled amount of potassium chloride thereto. The enriched effluent is returned and added to the electrolytic cell for further electrolysis, at a volume rate equal to the rate at which the unenriched effluent is removed from the cell.
