The present invention provides an improved method for the preparation of carboxylic acid esters of alkylene glycol monoalkyl ethers by the acid catalyzed esterification of the monoalkyl ether with a carboxylic acid. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the carboxylic acid and alcohol are reacted in a reactor/column and the resulting ester product is distilled into an overhead decanter/extractor as a single phase. A small amount of solvent, preferably a hydrocarbon is added to the mixture causing the resulting distillate to separate into two phases, one phase containing the desired product, the other containing primarily water. The process described is applicable to both batch and continuous operation and is not constrained by the difficulty of separating closely boiling azeotropes and results in substantially higher production rates than achieved by current processes.
Cette invention a trait à un procédé amélioré de production d'esters d'acide carboxylique d'éthers monoalkyles d'alkylène-glycol par une estérification catalysée d'éther monoalkyle à l'aide d'un acide carboxylique. Dans une réalisation préférée, on fait réagir l'acide carboxylique et l'alcool dans un réacteur/colonne et l'on distille l'ester résultant dans un décanteur/extracteur en position supérieure sous forme de phase unique. On ajoute au mélange une petite quantité de solvant, un hydrocarbure, de préférence, ce qui provoque la séparation du distillat résultant en deux phases, l'une contenant le produit désiré et l'autre essentiellement de l'eau. On ne rencontre pas avec ce procédé, qui est applicable tant à un processus discontinu qu'à un processus en continu et qui permet d'obtenir des taux de production sensiblement plus élevés que ceux que l'on obtient à l'aide des procédés existants, les difficultés soulevées par la nécessité de séparer des azéotropes à points d'ébullition proches.
