Provided is a method and apparatus for continuously producing activated silica from sodium silicate using carbon dioxide. The method comprises dissolving carbon dioxide in water to form carbonic acid and then reacting the carbonic acid with sodium silicate to produce activated silica in a reactor. The carbonic acid and sodium silicate are contacted under turbulent hydraulic conditions. The prevention of scale build ups can be achieved by using flexible tubing in the reactor. It is also preferred that a holding tank be employed in which the reaction is allowed to continue.
