An apparatus for thermoforming a thermoplastic article comprises an extrusion die for extruding a sheet of thermoplastic and a rotating wheel having at least one mold member. The mold member includes a male mold or forming cavity for receiving at least a portion of a substantially non-oriented (i.e., non- tensioned) thermoplastic sheet. The mold member is selectively heated and/or cooled during thermoforming to maintain the sheet in a molten or thermoformable state. The mold member also comprises a stripper plate maintained at a predetermined temperature or temperature distribution for inducing a predetermined degree of crystallinity to the sheet. The stripper plate enables the articles to be separated from the mold without distortion. In one embodiment, the thermoformed article has at least two and preferably at least three distinct regions of thermally-induced crystallinity.
Machine servant à thermoformer un article thermoplastique et comprenant une filière d'extrusion servant à extruder une feuille de thermoplastique, et une roue en rotation possédant au moins un élément de moulage. Cet élément de moulage comporte un moule mâle ou cavité de formage servant à recevoir au moins une partie d'une feuille thermoplastique pratiquement non orientée (c'est-à-dire, non soumise à une tension). On réchauffe et/ou on refroidit cet élément de moulage pendant le thermoformage, de manière à conserver la feuille dans un état de fusion ou dans un état thermoformable. Cet élément de moulage comprend également une plaque de démoulage maintenue à une température prédéterminée ou dont la température est distribuée afin de provoquer un degré prédéterminé de cristallinité dans la feuille. Cette plaque de démoulage permet de séparer les articles du moule sans déformation. Dans un mode de réalisation. L'article thermoformé possède au moins deux et, de préférence, au moins trois zones distinctes de cristallinité provoquée par la chaleur.
