ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The particles of a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed move continuously transverse to the flow of a gaseous or liquid fluidizing fluid. The velocity profile of the particulate bed of this process has greater uniformity when the bed is operated at increased magnetic fields and lower superficial fluid velocities, lower bed tilt angle, lower average solids velocities or a combination of each. A more uniform velocity profile can also be obtained using a properly designed weir. By appropriately adjusting the magnetic field, the bed tilt angle, the average solids velocity, the superficial fluid velocity and weir height, essentially uniform velocity profiles and bed height profiles can be obtained. It is found additionally that the bed par- ticles have increased fluidity when the bed is operated at or substantially near the locus of transition between the bubbling and stabilized regions of the bed, i.e., such that the ratio of the difference between the transition velocity and the operating velocity to the difference between the transition velocity and the normal minimum fluidization velocity ranges between -0.1 and +0.5. In another preferred embodiment the entering fluid has a velocity component in the direction of solids flow, i.e., the transverse flow direction.
