Excavation from the ground surface to an underground element to be located is effected using a series of sleeve members which slide through an opening in a platform into the ground. The sleeve members thus connect together in a coaxial aligned row to form a cylindrical entry sleeve through which a person can climb downwardly to the excavated element. Excavation occurs by injecting high pressure liquid into the area within the sleeve members and by extracting the slurry so formed through a discharge duct which is integrally formed on one side wall on the sleeve member. The sleeve members gradually and continually descend into the hole as the excavation occurs to automatically form shoring to hold the surrounding soil against collapse.
