2103902 9214950 PCTABS00015 A transmission which may continuously vary its output speed over a range. Two pairs of opposed planetary gear sets are mounted on a carrier assembly driven by an input shaft (5), each supplied with two oscillating rotary inputs. One input is supplied by a variable-eccentricity index plate (7) drivingly connected to a ring gear (12) of each planetary gear set via a respective crank arm (8a, 8c, 9b, 9d) and sector gear (10a, 10c, 11b, 11d). The other input is supplied by reaction gears (16a-d) directly connected to a sun gear (15) of each planetary gear set and engaging a fixed commutator gear (28) having teeth on 180· of its inner surface. The output of one pair of planetary gear sets drive the ring gear (21) of adifferential, while the outputs of the other pair of planetary gear sets drive the sun gear (22), the carrier (25) serving as output member for the transmission.
