ABSTRACT A two regime, continuously variable ratio motor vehicle trans- mission system having coaxial input and output shafts, includes a continuously variable ratio transmission unit (a variator) connected coaxially to the input shaft and having a coaxial output shaft. A mixing epicyclic gear train has a first input gear coupled to the system input shaft in 1:1 ratio, a second input gear, and an output gear coupled to the system output shaft in 1:1 ratio. A Low Regime epicyclic gear train is disposed between the variator and the mixing epicyclic gear train and has an input gear coupled to the variator output shaft, a braked gear cooperating with a Low Regime brake, and an output gear coupled to the mixing epicyclic second input gear. Thus drive may be transmitted in Low Regime from the variator output to the mixing epicyclic in a non-unity ratio. A High Regime clutch means is connected so as to couple the variator output shaft to the system output shaft in 1:1 ratio when engaged.
