A marine propulsion unit has two contra-rotating propellers (15, 16) driven by a single shaft (25) through gearing which includes a set of static planetary gears (40), an external gear (30), and an internal gear (44). The gearing is mounted in an oil-filled gear box having three, co-axial cylindrical sections (12, 13, 14). The outer two sections (12, 14) rotate in opposite directions and provide respective propeller hubs. The intermediate section (13) is stationary and serves as a carrier for the planetary gears (40) and a mount for flow-straightening vanes (18) which support a cylindrical shroud (17). An angular passage (28) may be provided in the intermediate section (13) to exhaust combustion gases through openings in the outside of the shroud (17) when the unit forms part of an outboard motor.

La présente invention concerne une unité de propulsion marine comportant deux hélices contrarotatives (15, 16) mues par un seul arbre (25) grâce à une pignonnerie se composant d'un ensemble de planétaires statiques (40), d'un pignon externe (30) et d'un pignon interne (44). La pignonnerie est montée dans une boîte remplie d'huile comportant trois segments cylindriques coaxiaux (12, 13, 14). Les deux segments extérieurs (12, 14) tournent en sens opposés et constituent chacun un moyeu d'hélice. Le segment intermédiaire (13), qui est stationnaire, sert de support pour les planétaires, et sert de monture pour des ailettes de rectification d'écoulement (18), laquelle monture supporte un carénage cylindrique (17). Un passage angulaire (28) peut être ménagé dans le segment intermédiaire (13) pour évacuer les gaz de combustion au travers d'orifices pratiqués dans la partie extérieure du carénage (17) lorsque l'unité est intégrée à un moteur hors bord.
