Improved contraceptive compositions are disclosed which comprise a spermicide or virucide, certain hydrophobically modified polysaccharides and optionally a cosmetic ingredient. Quite advantageously, the hydrophobically modified polysaccharides of the present invention can alter sperm motility and can provide reduced irritation potential when used in combination with spermicides such as, for example, nonoxynol-9.
