Recently some biological hay preservatives containing bacterial inoculants have been on the market. Contramold plus Nutribase, the product described here, is a freeze-dried preparation of bacteria which naturally live on the surface of growing alfalfa plant plus a sterile nutrient base extracted from the same plant. Contramold plus Nutribase can preserve the hay very effectively. It can push down the growth of mold in baled hay by more than 70% within a week after inoculation. The inoculation should be carried out 48 hrs. after baling.
