A contrast ratio improving method for a display image projected on a screen in a liquid crystal projector; and a liquid crystal projector which uses this improving method and which comprises a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell consisting of at least one nematic liquid crystal provided with at least a light source and electrodes, and two polarizers disposed so as to sandwich the liquid crystal cell, characterized in that at least two sheets of HBLC optical film are disposed between the polarizers so that the delay phase axes of the films cross approximately orthogonally to prevent the occurrence of a phase difference in a direction normal to the film surfaces.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour améliorer le rapport de contraste d'une image projetée sur un écran par un projecteur à cristaux liquides, ainsi qu'un projecteur à cristaux liquides qui met en oeuvre ce procédé d'amélioration. Ce projecteur comprend une cellule à cristaux liquides nématiques en hélice, composée d'au moins un cristal liquide nématique doté d'au moins une source lumineuse et d'électrodes, et deux polariseurs disposés en sandwich autour de la cellule à cristaux liquides. L'invention est caractérisée en ce qu'au moins deux feuilles d'un film optique HBLC sont placées entre les polariseurs, de sorte que les axes de déphasage des films se croisent presque à angle droit pour éviter l'occurrence d'une différence de phase dans une direction perpendiculaire aux surfaces du film.
