A control arrangement is provided for power electronic switches and especially an inverse-parallel connected pair of thyristors operating at medium voltages. The control arrangement does not require an external power supply and exhibits improved dv/dt capabilities. The improved dv/dt capabilities are achieved by the control arrangement exhibiting a voltage drop when conducting that is significantly more than the voltage drop across the conducting power electronic switch. In a specific implementation, the control arrangement includes a plurality of series-connected electronic control devices. In a specific implementation, the electronic control devices are light-activated triggering devices which provide isolation between the control signals to the control arrangement and the power electronic switch.
