The invention is directed to a circuit for fine-tuning mechanical output in a magnetostrictive or electrostrictive apparatus comprising a feedback system which measures mechanical output and feeds said measurements to driving circuitry that controls the power input to said apparatus. Another aspect of the invention is directed to a switching circuit for selecting a driving circuit comprising: (a) at least one drive coil for establishing an alternating electromagnetic field, and at least one feedback coil wherein said switching circuit has a voltage dependent on the nature of an insert placed within the windings. of said drive coil, and feedback coil and (b) a logic circuit adapted to detect different voltages in said switching circuit.
