ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A safety circuit forming part of a control circuit for controlling the power transmitted by a switching element such as a triac is disclosed. The safety circuit includes pulse generators which periodically supply blocking pulses to the switching element. A detector establishes whether, in spite of the blocking pulse, the switching element still transmits power to a power element and, if so, the power element or the whole circuit is switched off. This permits a continuous check to be carried out on the operation of the control circuit and switching element preventing power from being supplied to the power element on the break-down of the switching element or the control circuit.
