PHN.8608 26-7-1977 ABSTRACT: A matrix printer for characters which are composed of individual dots. The recording elements form at least one group, successive groups being chained in the line direction. Between successive recording elements within as well as be- tween the groups, each time predetermined row jumps and column jumps are present, so that each group always covers all rows of a character. All recording elements are accommodated in a member which can be driven to and fro along the lines of characters, so that during each movement stroke (in one or both directions) a line of characters is printed. At the beginning of a line, a chaining unit is filled with a start- ing column address and a starting row address and also with a starting character address, the latter being dons to address a line buffer which contains data of a line of cha- racters. In reaction thereto the line buffer supplies a character signal which serves to address a character genera- tor which also receives column addresses and row addresses as further sub-addresses. The chain unit contains data as regards the relevant row jumps and column jumps. Between the displacement of the movable member over-one column dis- tance, the chaining circuit once successively calculates dot data for all recording elements, said data being serially loaded into a dot register. When the next column position is reached, the dot data are used to activate the recording elements. The character generator comprises at least two sets of characters of different dimensions of the character field, and the chaining unit comprises per character set at least one mode position for translating the column jumps and row jumps of the recording elements into row addresses and column addresses for the character generator. The relevant -36- PHN 8608 jumps may be embodied in a counter in the case of regular spacing (for example, the row addresses) and, in the case of irregular spacing, in a read-only memory (for example, the column jumps if a non-integer number of character field is present between successive recording elements).
