2133318 9322151 PCTABScor01 A modular control means for an electrically driven vehicle in which modules (2, 12-18) are interconnected by a serial data bus (10). One line (26) of the serial data bus (10) may be biased high or low by modules of the system (2, 12-18) upon detection of a fault. This is detected by kill means (45) of the modules (2, 13-17) of the system which disables safety related functions of each module (2, 13-17), where applicable. Modules (2, 13-17) other than the remote control module (12, 18) may include wake-up means (52, 20) which supply power to the modules (2, 13-17) at start up when the data line (26) is biased high. The modules (2, 12-18) preferably operate as finite state machines with each module (2, 12-18) storing in its memory network variables required for the operation of that module (2, 12-18). The network variables including the state of other modules, external demand signals, and measured variables of the system. A method of achieving increased resolution in the control of a DC motor by a pulse width modulator having a limited number of output data bits and a method of mounting components (378) by biasing them against a wall of a casing (350) are also disclosed.
