The amount of an undesired diarylalkane by-product formed in an alkylation reaction using a zeolite beta catalyst in which a feed aromatic reacts with an olefin is reduced by using an alkylaromatic diluent in an amount such that the ratio of phenyl group per alkyl group corresponding to the olefin reactant entering the reactor is held in the range 0.75:1 to 25:1 and the concentration of the olefin entering the reaction is less than an amount calculated by dividing MW O by the sum of 6.17 MW A and MW O where MW O = molecular weight of the olefin and MW AA = molecular weight of the feed aromatic.
