A biologically pure culture of Erwinia herbicola NRRL B-21856 is described which is highly effective as a biological control agent against Erwinia amylovora, the cause of fire blight, the destructive disease of apples and pears. The invention also encompasses methods of biologically controlling fire blight disease using the bacterium of the invention, and agricultural compositions which incorporate the strain.
