A new method to control the iridescence colour of solid nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) films by ultrasound and high-shear (mechanical) energy input to the NCC suspension prior to film formation is provided. As the energy input to the NCC suspension increases, the resulting film colour shifts from the ultraviolet region towards the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum; this wavelength shift lies in the opposite direction to that caused by the addition of electrolytes to NCC suspensions prior to film formation. No additives are required to achieve the changes in colour; colour changes can also be effected by mixing two suspensions exposed to different levels of sonication of differing sonication levels.

La présente invention concerne un procédé pour réguler la couleur de l'iridescence de films solides de cellulose nanocristalline (NCC) par application d'énergie ultrasonique et de fort cisaillement (mécanique) à la suspension de NCC avant formation du film. Alors que l'application d'énergie à la suspension de NCC augmente, la couleur résultante du film varie et passe de la zone des ultraviolets à la zone de intrarouges du spectre électromagnétique. Cette variation de longueur d'onde s'effectue dans le sens inverse de celle causée par l'adjonction d'électrolytes aux suspensions de NCC avant formation du film. Aucun additif n'est nécessaire pour obtenir les changements de couleur. Les changements de couleur peuvent également être réalisés par mélange de deux suspensions exposées à différents niveaux de sonication.
