ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Smoke contained in gases and, in particular, in waste gases, from a diesel engine may be reduced by the method described herein. The method from the purification of exhaust gases issuing from a diesel engine involves passing the gases through a catalyst, which is of a special nature, namely which comprises (a) a catalytic material comprising one or more metals of the platinum group, (b) a support comprising a filter material which is obstructive enough to enable the catalytic material to filter particles from the exhaust gases and is coarse enough to avoid generation of a back pressure of above four inches of mercury, and (c) a washcoat provided between the catalytic material and the support. The method involves passing exhaust gases issuing from the engine without pre-heating into the catalyst, the gases being being at a temperature at which catalytic oxidation of carbon particle can take place; and passing the exhaust gases through the catalyst, whereupon the disposition of the filter material inhibits straight through flow of the gases, thereby imparting turbulence to the gases. In this way not only is the probability of contact between the particle and the catalytic material increased, but also, turbulence is imparted to the gas stream to increase the probability of contact between the particles and the catalytic material.
