A control rod includes a spacer (6) having a C or U-shaped channel cross- section and a bushing tube (8) welded to each end of the spacer (6). Each end of the spacer (6) is shaped to have a substantially continuous mating engagement with the exterior side surface of the adjacent bushing tube (8). At least a substantially complete perimeter weld (W) joins both the interior and exterior of each shaped end to the bushing tube (8).
