ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a mirror constrained to translation, the position thereof being controlled by a piezoelectric ceramic operating as a bimorph. The controllable mirror is particularly useful in a ring laser. The mirror is attached at one end of a central post which is coaxial with a surrounding rigid rim. A pair of flexible parallel membranes are connected at the outer boundaries thereof to the rim member and to the central post. A rigid hub is positioned adjacent and coaxial with the other end of the central post member and includes a bearing member which will apply an axial force to the central post. A metallic membrane is attached to the hub member and to another rim member which in turn is connected to the first rigid rim member. A pair of piezoelectric wafers are attached to opposite surfaces of the metallic membrane and are connected to a source of control voltage. Changes in the control voltage are reflected in stress changes in the wafers which in turn effect a movement of the metallic membrane. The bearing member acts or. the central post to move the mirror in or out, without any tilting thereof.
