Controllable polarisation transformer comprising a passive mode converter (4), a controllable phase shifter (5) and a controllable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (7). The mode converter (4) converts the first signal component of one polarisation (TE or TM) of a light signal entering via an input (1) into a signal component of the other polarisation without affecting the second signal component of the other polarisation (TM or TE), the conversion taking place to another order of the guided mode. Phase control by means of the phase shifter (5) controls the intensity distribution of the light signal over the two branches (8, 9) of the interferometer (7). Optical wavelength control in the interferometer (7) controls the phase with which the signals through the branches come together in the output (2). Advantages: very good integration capability, preferably on semiconductor material, with a waveguide structure which can be achieved in a single etching step and without critical manufacturing parameters; can be used reciprocally, even as a polarisation modulator.
Transformateur de polarisation contrôlable comportant un convertisseur de mode passif (4), un décaleur de phase contrôlable (5) et un interféromètre Mach-Zehnder contrôlable (7). Le convertisseur de mode (4) convertit le premier élément de signal (mode TE ou TM) d'un signal lumineux d'entrée (1) en élément de signal de polarisation contraire sans modifier le deuxième élément du signal de l'autre polarisation (mode TM ou TE), la conversion se produisant dans un autre ordre du mode guidé. Le réglage de phase au moyen du décaleur de phase (5) permet de contrôler la distribution de l'intensité du signal lumineux sur les deux branches (8 et 9) de l'interféromètre (7). Le contrôle de la longueur d'onde lumineuse dans l'interféromètre (7) permet de contrôler la phase des signaux circulant dans les branches et qui se joignent à la sortie (2). Avantages : très bonne capacité d'intégration, de préférence avec des matériaux semiconducteurs, avec une structure de guide d'ondes qui peut être réalisée en une seule étape de gravage et sans paramètres de fabrication critiques; peut être utilisé réciproquement, même comme modulateur de polarisation.
