A controlled deflection roll for a papermaking machine. The roll (10) comprises a roll shaft (14) having a longitudinal axis (18), a roll shell (22) surrounding the shaft, and a bearing pad assembly (50) supported on the shaft to supportingly engage the shell and move the shell translationally relative to the shaft in a plane including the axis. In one embodiment, the bearing pad assembly includes a plurality of bearing pads (54). Each bearing pad is spaced apart in the cross-machine direction and has a contact surface engageable with the inner surface (58) of the shell. The contact surface is in the shape of a parallelogram and defines therein at least one recess (70). The side edges (64) of adjacent bearing pads are straight and parallel to each other and define gaps therebetween. The gaps do not extend along a plane which is perpendicular to the axis. In another embodiment, the bearing pad assembly includes at least one bearing pad having a contact surface and opposite edges (66, 68). The contact surface has a contact surface portion engageable with the shell. The contact surface portion has a plurality of continuous contact surface portions (74A; 74B; 74C) extending between the opposite edges such that each of said continuous contact surface portions does not extend in a plane which is perpendicular to said axis. The roll further comprises a hydraulic assembly (78) independently actuating the plurality of bearing pads to selectively engage the shell and supplying lubricant between the support surfaces and the shell. A pressure profile and a temperature profile are created along the length of the shell. The bearing pads engage the shell such that the pressure profile and the temperature profile are substantially evenly distributed along the length of said shell.
L'invention concerne un rouleau de déviation commandé pour machine à fabriquer le papier. Ce rouleau (10) comprend un arbre (14) présentant un axe longitudinal (18), une coque (22) entourant ledit arbre et un système de patins d'appui (50) soutenu sur l'arbre de manière à être en contact de maintien avec la coque et à lui faire effectuer un mouvement de translation par rapport à l'arbre dans un plan intégrant l'axe. Dans un mode de réalisation, le système de patins d'appui comprend plusieurs patins d'appui (54). Chaque patin d'appui est placé à distance dans le sens perpendiculaire à la fabrication et comporte une surface de contact pouvant s'appliquer sur la surface intérieure (58) de la coque. La surface de contact se présente sous forme de parallélogramme et y définit au moins une cavité (70). Les arêtes latérales (64) des patins d'appui adjacents sont droites et parallèles et définissent des espaces entre elles. Ces espaces ne s'étendent pas le long d'un plan perpendiculaire à l'axe. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, le système de patins d'appui comprend au moins un patin d'appui ayant une surface de contact et des arêtes opposées (66, 68). La surface de contact comporte une section pouvant s'appliquer sur la coque. La section de surface de contact comporte une pluralité de parties de surface de contact (74A; 74B; 74C) qui s'étendent entre les arêtes opposées, de manière que chacune des parties de surface de contact ne s'étende pas dans un plan perpendiculaire audit axe. Le rouleau comprend en outre un système hydraulique (78) qui actionne de manière indépendante la pluralité de patins d'appui afin qu'ils s'appliquent de manière sélective sur la coque et délivrent du lubrifiant entre les surfaces de maintien et la coque. Un profil de pression et un profil de température sont créés le long de la longueur de la coque. Les patins d'appui s'appliquent sur la coque de manière que le profil de pression et le profil de température soient sensiblement répartis uniformément le long de la longueur de ladite coquille.
